about

Fitacola is a handmade collage project by Graça Santos and Carlos Quitério.

We are a duo of collage artists who love cut paper collage, the mixing and taping of old and new references, creating new ideas and concepts from all kinds of images, magazines, books and papers in general. We put it all together with adhesive tape (Fitacola in Portuguese), thus the name. Our work supplies come, mostly, from flee-markets, second hand stores and old magazines and papers.

We love playing with all these images, icons, visual noise and information we all come to acquire during our lives and we love to make sense out of these random pieces of paper put together, playing with our global, national or even local common memories.

Aside from our commissioned works, we don't plan our collage works as illustrations, we just start cutting and combining until we are pleased with the result.

Creating  something completely different and yet being able to make it unique, always with a distinct meaning every time someone else looks at it, it's motivating and rewarding.

Collage Voyage introduces a new concept on our art process: The reinterpretation of collage through its representation in paintings.

100% handmade collages with vibrant colorful shapes and transparencies

First part of a continuous collage project, called “Reference Forms”, where a stack of physical reference forms support compositions made from our archived collection of vintage magazines, pamphlets, newspapers, postcards, typography, etc… It’s a figurative ongoing project We’ve been developing since 2005, where intuition and randomness have great emphasis to define the relationship between our acquired collection (the medium) “I should preserve” (which is morally more accepted) and the act of dis-assembling/cutting them into new pieces that gain new life together as an aesthetic contemplative piece.
